A strategic town
In the 10th century
Saint-Aignan was built around its château, on the lands of Eudes I, Count of Blois. The Hagard Tower is the only remaining part of the 9th-century fortress and stands as the oldest section of the château. Perched on the hillside above the Cher, the medieval town enjoyed a strategic position at the crossroads of the Three Provinces.

In the oldest parts of the town, traces of the medieval era remain visible through remarkable historical landmarks such as the Collegiate Church (11th–12th centuries), the crypt, a true gem of Romanesque architecture, and charming half-timbered houses dating back to the late 15th century.
Today
The château is still home to the La Roche-Aymon family, direct descendants of the Beauvilliers, Dukes of Saint-Aignan.
A vibrant and flavourful destination
Visiting Saint-Aignan also means discovering high-quality local shops. From restaurants, and delicatessens to gourmet food stores and home décor boutiques, there’s something to delight every visitor.
After exploring the town center, take a peaceful walk along the Ile-Plage by the Cher river. From here, you’ll enjoy a stunning view of the medieval town and its architectural gems. In summer, the Ile-Plage comes alive with a beachside atmosphere: open-air cafés, lively events, food stalls and even a swimming pool.
