Good to know

You’ll be the ultimate château expert in your group of friends with these 3 fun facts 👀
The fortress belonged to the Amboise family for centuries. It’s the 4th most visited château in the Loire Valley, and once you step through its grand doors, you’ll understand why. Want to become the King of the châteaux de la Loire? Here are 3 facts to impress your friends during the visit 👇🏼
- The fortress of Chaumont-sur-Loire was originally built on the orders of Eudes I, Count of Blois, to guard the frontiers between the counties of Blois and Anjou. The Amboise family became owners in 1054!
- Catherine de Médicis, the queen of the swap? In 1550, Catherine de Médicis bought the château from the Amboise family… only to part with it nine years later! Indeed, Catherine de Médicis gifted the château to Diane de Poitiers. But do you know what she asked for in return? The Château de Chenonceau! Now that’s what we call a royal exchange!
- A tough punishment: In 1495, Pierre I d’Amboise joined the War of the Public Wheal. This move displeased the King Louis XI who, as a punishment, ordered Chaumont-sur-Loire to be set on fire! The château was burned down the same year.
